في تركمانستان قام العلماء السوفييت عام 1971 بالتنقيب عن الغاز الطبيعي واثناء الحفر انهارت الارض تحت منصة الحفر وانهارت المنصة والمخيم ولم تزهق أرواح في الحادث ومع ذلك تم الإفراج عن كميات كبيرة من غاز الميثان وخوفا من خلق مشكلة بيئية واللتي تشكل خطرا محتملا على أهل القرى المجاورة وخوفا من إطلاق الغازات السامة قرر العلماء حرق الغاز المكتشف وكانوا يتوقعون ان الغاز سيحرق في غضون أيام ولكن فوهة الغاز لا تزال مشتعلة منذ 42 سنه فسبحان الخالق العظيم
